The inspiration for Passbook for a new Democratic South Africa came soon after a plane chartered by the Gupta family landed at Waterkloof airforce base. A procedure that was highly unusual in the fact that it was a commercial flight landing at a government airport. This highlighted a question, how could a private family gain such an unheard of favor that is only reserved for foreign dignitaries. This action put them apart from the local populous. Thus the creation of passbooks for the elite.
